Brooke is missing.Įnter Kai Bennett - my new favourite book boyfriendĮach book that Tijan writes just gets better and better. Brooke left Hillcrest for good, and that was the last time I saw her.įourteen years later, I’m staring at her face on the television. Three months later, her father died, and Kai became the head of the Bennett Family. Her father said accident, but Brooke said murder. They were mafia, and Brooke’s oldest brother was dead. He came to our school with their father, and that’s when I learned what kind of family Brooke came from. Kai had eyes that pulled me in and a face that haunted my dreams. ![]() I became fascinated with her second-oldest brother. The only things she showed me were photographs of her brothers. She was fun and outgoing, but she kept quiet about her family. The wealthiest of the wealthy sent their kids to our boarding school, and Brooke Bennett had been at the top, though I never quite knew why. There were always whispers about my roommate at Hillcrest Academy. ![]()

Men are starting to fight back against the backlash. In addition, men are going on strike, either consciously or unconsciously, because they do not want to be injured by the myriad of laws, attitudes and hostility against them for the crime of happening to be male in the twenty-first century. They are instead acting rationally in response to the lack of incentives society offers them to be responsible fathers, husbands and providers. But why should men participate in a system that seems to be increasingly stacked against them? As Men on Strike demonstrates, men aren't dropping out because they are stuck in arrested development. The trend is so pronounced that a number of books have been written about this "man-child" phenomenon, concluding that men have taken a vacation from responsibility simply because they can. ![]() ![]() Men are sensing the backlash and are consciously and unconsciously going "on strike." This one does a good job of capturing both the euphoric joy and profound sadness of the novel. Woolf fans may be familiar with this style, as most of Woolf’s first book covers were designed by Bell. The cover pictured is the original and my favourite, designed by Woolf’s sister Vanessa Bell, who was a wonderful artist herself. (I love Ulysses too it will have its day.) This year I am taking matters into my own hands, and declare Mrs Dalloway Week open here at Absurd Reviews. There are events to mark it, especially in London, but it is yet to reach Bloomsday status. While Bloomsday (which celebrates James Joyce’s Ulysses) is widely celebrated every year, Dalloway Day is a far more modest affair.
